Let's begin with 'how'!
how did you get here?
How did you get here?
This page!
I’m guessing you clicked the link in the welcome email, or my Twitter bio.
Correct.
But how, exactly, did you arrive on this page?
Here is the answer:
You’re here; reading the content of this page because A PROCESS WORKED.
You clicked the link,
The browser sends a TCP connection to the internet server,
An HTTP request is sent to Beehiiv’s server,
Server accepts the request,
You receive a response (which is this page)
Even though you’re not conscious of those activities, you’re certain this is where you should be. You’re satisfied.
But what happens when you realize you are not where you want to be?
How does it feel when the entire structure you depend on fails to deliver as expected?
What if there wasn’t a structure to begin with?
Can you imagine a day in your life if URLs stopped working? You wake, turn on your computer and launch Slack!
> “Error! Connection unknown.”
You double-checked your internet connection, it's on and active. Clicked slack, again. Same response.
You realise you’re having a serious connection problem and opt to inform your team. *Opens Gmail*
> “Oh, snap! Looks like we can’t find that page”
You think: Something is fundamentally wrong; this is beyond just slack and email.
Maybe your city’s network provider stopped working. You need real-time information to make sense of this issue.
*Launch Twitter*
> “Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later”
You’re frustrated.
A beautiful sun-shining morning becomes a dark hollow space filled with the deafening sound of uncertainty.
Yet, clicking URLs is just one of the tiniest parts of your daily business life.
At this point, you might be wondering:
What is this newsletter about?
This newsletter is not about URLs and Browsers.
It’s about two things:
YOU. The Writer!
YOUR Writing Process!
Everyday you follow a plethora of processes that allow you to achieve goals. From tiny unconscious activities like clicking links and brushing your teeth, to more conscious actions like communicating with a client.
The goal of this newsletter is to awaken you to the reason why you are more successful at some activities than others.
Since you became old enough to remember things-you’ve consistently achieved the process of brushing your teeth.
Think about it:
You don’t scrub your teeth by rubbing a dry toothbrush all over your teeth, then apply toothpaste to the handle, before storing it back on the sink.
You’ve consciously practised the process of using a toothbrush so much it became a second nature.
The goal of this newsletter is to challenge you to imagine writing can be as successful as brushing your teeth.
To uncover instances in your writing process where you’re applying toothpaste to the handle of the toothbrush.
To help you develop goals for your writing business that you will ACTUALLY achieve because the process is enjoyable and aligns to your strength.
To help you go from “how to write a blog post” to “how to write a blog post repeatedly”.
Writing is already hard. The writing business? It’s like challenging the final boss in Mortal Kombat.
This newsletter WILL NOT MAKE IT EASY FOR YOU.
This newsletter WILL NOT CHALLENGE YOU TO REINVENT THE WHEEL.
That’s not the promise.
Instead, this newsletter WILL MAKE IT LESS COMPLICATED.
Here’s how!
How this newsletter might help you:
Each week, I'll share practical tips to develop strategies, skills and systems you need to thrive as a writer.
That means you will NOT get content that goes:
“I made $10,000 in my first month as a freelance writer, you can too:
Step 1: Study persuasion
Step 2: Do cold showers”
Instead you’d get this:
“How I generate consistent income writing despite being a second-language speaker”
> I developed a value system that align to my strengths
> I blocked 5 hours daily for practise”
The difference is this:
The writer in the first example sets a success metric that doesn’t consider that you might not have the capacity to achieve. You’re trying to become somebody else.
It’s like a straight log of wood attempting to become a curved iron. It would break; bending a wood requires methods different from bending an iron bar.
The second example shows techniques you can actually adopt to achieve NOT SIMILAR results, but result:
That aligns to your unique strength
That is repeatable.
Ultimately, you’re becoming YOU.
Every issue of this newsletter will have 3 pillars that look like this:
Topic: How to manage client relationships and secure repeat business.
Here are the strategies you need to successfully manage clients:
This section includes things like thinking about values that will help you stand out to your client.
Here are skills you need to successfully manage clients:
You’ll think about things like time management skills and expert opinions on the issue.
Here are the systems you need to successfully manage clients:
You’ll discover software, templates, frameworks, and processes for managing clients.
This newsletter’s mission is not to help you to strike gold tomorrow.
The mission is to wake up one day and realise you’re where you want to be (just as you got to this page)
Not because it was easy
Not because of a bunch of tips, tricks and template
But because you utilised a system to discover and double-down on your unique strengths.
I hope you will enjoy reading every issue, as much as I enjoy writing them.
Cheers!
